Excellent Implementation of the Board Game

The developers have faithfully implemented the board game of the same name. They have improved the player’s situational awareness by including the current stock and turn increase in the interface, making trivial what can be several time-consuming mental calculations in the board game. Rather than filling the screen with cards, the interface uses representations (e.g., a depiction of a simple hut for a level A farm and fancier images for levels I-III), but a tap on the tableau will bring up the card images for military, urban and rural buildings, wonders, government, or colonies.

The game also allows players to use the original board game rules or a slight (to me) modification, where colony auctions are blind and other effects take place on the player turn, that speeds play.

Note: This is the same game as the board game, so if you don’t like that, don’t expect to like this.

Abysmal balance and the AI cheats

I reviewed this better before I spent a lot of time with it. Now I hate this game and here's why. First off, NO GAME I've ever played has a worse model of "winners keep winning, losers keep losing" than this game. If you EVER fall behind on anything (and at least one player is weakest by definition), EVERY OTHER PLAYER attacks you constantly because it's free benefits for them. You become their resource and that's the end for you. If you fall behind on production, you get stuck in an impossible situation where you need x of A to make B to make C, which takes several turns while the other player is chugging along.

And I haven't even mentioned how the EASY AI is virtually unbeatable and they all cheat, with military power or culture that is higher than the combination of what they actually have. There's a reason you can't tap on the totals to see how it all adds up, because it doesn't.

I've put in tons of hours since this game came out and it has been 90% frustration, and I'm a gaming vet.

Excellent

I like this even better than the board game because it saves a lot of time with set up. Crashes sometimes, but doesn't ruin everything you can pick up where you left off. Also I think there is a bug with Julius Caesar where if you don't use his ability right away it becomes disabled. Nevertheless I love this game.
